This weekend, millions of Americans will be getting in their cars, buckling up, steering out onto the highway and, going nowhere. The American dream of freedom and wide open spaces seems a thing of the past; a "used to be" - Forget holiday weekends, everyday drive time is getting longer, and traffic is ever harder to escape.

No longer can you outsmart the traffic by leaving a little early, or a little later. Who are all those people and why do they always seem to be going where I want to go?

Engineers have ideas; we need smarter technology; gizmos to detect delays, or we simply need more lanes, or perhaps we should just make it more expensive to drive, force ourselves off the road. Or maybe it's something we'll have to live with, forever.
