Politics, for all the mystery, can be stunningly blunt. The Republican Party's advisory on upcoming mid term elections: "What Every Republican Incumbent Should Know" reads as follows, "Don't kid yourself. There is no new tone in politics. Democrats are going to be mean, nasty and negative. Be aggressive." Blunt, like a hammer.
The Republicans are going to have to be aggressive if they're to dodge the midvterm jinx; that trap, that trend, that says the party in the White House routinely gets nailed in its first midvterm election.
George Bush is campaigning like a bandit to make sure the GOP retains power in the House and makes progress in the Senate. The man in charge of all the Republican congressional campaigns, Representative Tom Davis, is working it too.
