At the center of the debate over the Middle East is the city of Jerusalem. And at the center of that city is a man named Sari Nusseibeh. As the Palestinian Authority representative in Jerusalem, Nusseibeh is both close to Arafat and involved in the search for peace.
The philosophy professor is notable for his willingness to speak out, not only against the Israeli occupation of the territories, but also against the tactics of the suicide bombers. As the rhetoric of hatred and despair gets louder and more intense on both sides, it's getting tougher to talk about a resolution. Those who do find themselves increasingly isolated and less likely to be heard.
Because of ongoing developments in Jerusalem, Sari Nusseibeh has cancelled a planned United States speaking tour April 22 to May 1, 2002, with Tzaly Reshef, one of the founders of the Israeli Peace Now movement. Among the cancelled events, a public address April 23 at the International Center for Ethics, Justice, and Public Life at Brandeis University.
