The latest news to shake the Catholic Church is, sadly, nothing new. Investigations and public outrage are forcing the Boston Archdiocese to reveal decades of child sexual abuse involving as many as 70 priests and hundreds of victims. Cardinal Bernard Law calls it a scourge, a breakdown in trust, a grave evil. That it continued on his watch for as long as it did, he says, is tragic. Cardinal Law is now turning over lists of predator priests to the state. What that shows is that the church in Boston, as elsewhere, did know and chose to deal with pedophilia on the Q.T., raising the question: What's more important: The reputation of the church or the victims themselves?
