Just when it seemed so straightforward, with regular self-examination and a mammogram once a year, and a woman could feel secure she was doing her best to beat breast cancer. Those women with cancer could take some comfort in the knowledge that beyond drugs, radiation, and surgery, support groups offered hope for a chance at a longer life. In the last few weeks, both of these medical pillars have been challenged. Yet as always when trying to understand this deadly disease, the news, though complex, isn't all dire. At the same time as old beliefs are being debunked, fresh technologies are coming on line, better tests and new drug therapies like aromatase inhibitors, and herceptin are catching the attention of the medical community.
