Few names inspire such ferocious distaste from defenders of the literary canon, and such unconditional love from almost everyone else. With the 20th century safely behind us, can we finally toss Bilbo and Frodo, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings in the trash bin of irrelevance? Or will readers' polls continue to put the pipe-puffing Oxford prof in the number one spot? Tolkien's Middle Earth to many seems far off, innocent, archaic, furry-footed protagonists, talking trees, warriors and magicians.
