The Most Dangerous Woman in America; that's what they called Mother Jones. In the gilded age of American capitalism, when American workers struggled for basic rights, Mother Jones led the charge. In the coalfields of Pennsylvania and West Virginia, Mother Jones was there. On the long march against child labor, Mother Jones was there.
She was the matriarch of '60s radicals, the poster-mum for up-and-coming activists. But as the world of work has changed, the memory of Mother Jones has faded. Now, with corporations dropping non-unionized workers like maples shed leaves in October, it's time to reconsider the life and times of a remarkable woman. Pray for the dead but fight like hell for the living.
